Why I think the Chinese writing system is TERRIBLE
Просмотров 75 тыс.Год назад
No, it really is. I have come to the conclusion that Chinese characters aren't just difficult for English speakers to learn. They're difficult to learn on an ABSOLUTE SCALE. For lovers of Chinese though, this doesn't have to change anything. We can still admire the beauty in Chinese characters while recognizing that it's truly an inefficient and illogical system of writing... or I may be wrong....

    With the advance in technology in future, the Chinese character would no longer need to simplify, in fact it would be goes back to the traditional system.

    unified language is good for communication but the native is your root should never forget at least should document and keep them so these who want to practice and learn should be able to and that people will remember there was a this language which was spoken by the people of this region this was their culture From history we know many parts are missing or dont have much credibility so we should always keep record of everything we never know when some culture/thing might totally vanish in this fast pacing world

    I’m half Hakka on my mother’s side but have enough trouble trying to be more fluent in Mandarin since it was spoken at home and being raised in New York, it makes it harder to learn both, much that I wanted to and nearly all my friends with Hakka heritage can’t speak Hakka fluently either. I do respect the Hakka ways and wish I was younger and had time to learn since my mom told me it wasn’t that hard but she didn’t live long enough to make time to teach me. At least I can further explore my Hakka heritage more as I find it very fascinating.

    China has 57 official ethnic groups. To unify the country u need a common written & spoken language. This was done by Emperor Qin the 1st Emperor who conquered & united the other 6 different states to form China under Qin Dynasty its 1st dynasty back in BC 221, almost 2500 yrs ago.

    Very informative and well structured video. I do understand that people want to preserve their culture by keeping their regional language, but Mandarin seems to be a lot more practical. I guess you can't have both and eventually either the regional languages will slowly die out in a few hundreds of years or there will be another big change in geopolitics

    • @time847
      @time847 18 часов назад

      It is good for having a single language and party of unification of a country. Diversity of a nation is bad for the nation growth. You said local revolution and separation movement which will weaken china national power and let western country take advantage of china so never should it happen. China current system is not perfect but good I personally lived in china and I am half chinese I think the life I lived in china is good. Western country are very good at divide and rule so unification of culture,language, nation and rule is very important.Only in unity could a country devolp faster rather then divided country. Unification of culture and language started from Qin Shi huang times.

    如果在中国去旅游,问路问价格却完全听不懂的时候,我想还是先推广普通话吧,先保证交流便利,推广完了再保护方言。其实方言消失更多的是人们懒于学习,我会说家乡方言,但我也考了普通话一级乙等。没有什么难的。在家说方言 在学校说普通话,多棒的语言环境。

    I think the official language of China which is now called Mandarin was already spoken more than three thousand years ago, same time with the introduction of six thousand five hundred Chinese characters as written letters. However China territory is so vast with high mountain ranges, high plateaus, deserts and plains, there's not enough teachers to reached every corners of the empire. Therefore, the official language spoken evolves in different tones and dialects in every corners of the empire like Mandarin, Shantongese, Shanghainese, Cantonese, Fujianese, Zechuanese, Hakka etc... The written words remain the same although with some modification.

    I am so glad that, unlike many uninformed people and RUclipsrs, you call those Chinese LANGUAGES instead of dialects because all those are indeed languages from the linguistic perspective. This fact has to be repeated again and again and again until more and more people are informed and fewer and fewer people make mistake about.

    Terrible for non-native Chinese language users, like yourself. Japanese and Koreans tried to get rid of the Chinese writing system completely, with both efforts failing significantly

  • @aoshi000
    @aoshi000 2 дня назад

    I get the history and advantage of simplification, Japan did it as well but to a lesser extent (Korea and Vietnam did away with it). My personal preference is traditional. It mostly comes down to which version you learn first, if you learn traditional first you wouldn't think it's hard, if you learn simplified first it'll look fine to you. To me, simplified always looks somewhat unwieldly or uneducated, because it made shorthand official, sure words like cuz or gonna are spelled with fewer alphabets than because and going to, but they are colloquial and shouldn't replace the formal ver. Other than politics, it comes down to branding as well. In Chinese, it's actually called the complex form and simplified form, but the eng translation is traditional, which automatically makes it the "legit" version. While japan calls it the new form and old form, and new sounds better than old or outdated. Different countries went thru (lazy to type through lol) different language reform process. It is what it is...

    The thing you said about the silhouette thing is due to how Hanzi is taught. If one wants to learn Hanzi effectively, one should deconstruct what the characters are and why it looks like that because of the logical system behind creating Hanzi characters. The thing is that unlike spoken language where words are a bit arbitrary, Hanzi is rational. Hanzi is more akin to emojis rather than a Latin alphabet.

    • @DerpDerp3001
      @DerpDerp3001 3 дня назад

      Adding on to this, if it’s meaningless, the simplification is sloppy. Hanzi isn’t a system made up of arbitrary characters, it should be that one should see a compound ideogram and effectively memorize it because the components can be deconstructed.

  • @DerpDerp3001
    @DerpDerp3001 3 дня назад

    Isn’t the writing system pretty logical when deconstructed?

  • @DerpDerp3001
    @DerpDerp3001 3 дня назад

    I do believe Hanzi was created as a solution to China having multiple languages so that the literate could communicate with each other without having to learn a lingua Franca. Hanzi was the lingua Franca. The other things is due to efficiency. Mandarin and all the other Chinese languages have tones and homophones, so a phonetic system would be incredibly inefficient. Also, it saves space.

    Speaking as a Korean-American currently residing in Ankara 🇹🇷, doing research on Ottoman history - neither English nor Chinese is free from critique, but in order to really make a proportional comparison, wouldn’t it be necessarry to compare (i) *the Chinese writing system*, employed by speakers / hearers / readers / writers of all languages currently or recently based on it (including obviously Japanese but certainly Cantonese, Hokkien, and Chu Nom, Idu Korean, etc.) with (ii) another writing system, such as Arabic - inclusive of Urdu, Persian, Ottoman, Pashto, Kashmiri, and so on? Formally educated users of these languages can recognize Arabic derived sematic roots such as the one for “love,” without knowing the precise definitions, spelling, pronunciations, etc. Similarly for Latin-based scripts, North Indian (Hindi Bengali Punjabi etc.), South Indian (Tamil Kannada Telugu Malayalam), Thai Lao Khmer, and so forth and their respective cases
